We look back to the year 1979, when this institute was started, and on 19th March 1980, when it was formally inaugurated by the Gandhian Trade Unionist Shri G. Ramanujam, General Secretary of the Indian National Trade Union Congress. The Institute was registered on 31st December 1981 under the Societies Act XXVII of 1975, to function independently from SBOA. Since its inception the Institute has been continuously reshaping itself to be a full fledged Institute to cater to the varied and diversified needs not only of its members but also the various trade unions in the banking industry and other professional workers in sharpening their knowledge and skills to ensure their beneficial contributions to the Trade Union Movement and to be in the service of the nation.

To make their members agile all democratic trade unions have to develop their effectiveness and skill. The leaders have to improve their knowledge and also of their members at the grass root level. A trained and well informed cadre is the greatest asset of any organisation. With such lofty ideals, the State Bank of India Officers’ Association (Madras Circle) has embarked upon the programme of educating and equipping the membership of SBOA at all levels through the assistance of this Institute. The birth of SBOA Institute for Trade Union Education and Research in the year 1979, was for the specific purpose of research oriented programmes in trade union movement as well as educating the trade union leaders and members.

The lofty ideals which motivated the birth of the institute today stands amply met by the waves and waves of trade union members who pass through the Institute moulded by various programmes.

Even prior to the promotion of the Institute, the State Bank of India Officers’ Association (Madras Circle) conducted various programmes on Disciplinary Proceedings, Union Effectiveness, Time Management, Leadership Development and Trade Union Development programmes. These programmes were conducted by the Association either independently or in cp-ordination with the Labour Institutes / State Productivity Councils / Government Agencies etc.

Major objectives of the Institute

The Major objective of the Institute is to promote and facilitate the growth of the independent trade union movement in India and to provide a forum for promoting a scientific and professional study of all aspects of the Trade Union Movement. The institute is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge and dissemination of information on significant developments of trade union education, training and research among trade unions. Another area of concern is to develop the skills of knowledge and create trade union awareness among the members of trade union organisations.

Library

Numerous books are added to the library of the Institute. We trust a well equipped library with many books on references on various subjects must be used by the members. The documentation of the many papers, periodicals received from all over the world are undertaken by the Institute.

ACTIVITIES DURING 2008-2011

The institute trained 1121 students in Conversational Hindi, and 2400 students in Conversational English. During this period two capsule programmes of 10 days duration each, were conducted for conversational course. 330 contact programmes were held in 14 centres (Chennai, Tiruchi, Madurai, Coimbatore, Tanjavore, pondicherry, Nagapattinam, Villupuram, Nagarkovil, Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Rajesthan, Hyderabad)

We trained 120 students in Post Graduate Diploma in Translation, Journalism and Personnel Admn &HRM. A special Personal Contact programme of 3 days duration was conducted at Kolkata, . The President, SBIOA Bengal Circle inaugurated the programme and General Manager of SBI, Kolkata gave the valedictory address.

Acknowledging our quality of training many institutions like LVB . BSNL, BHEL, etc., sponsored their staff members to the various courses. SRM university, Anna malai Universiy, MGR University etc., also sponsored their faculty, staff members for our Conversational Hindi programme.

In order to add more value to the courses conducted by our Institute, we have contemplated to have tie up arrangmenet with Annamalai university. The preliminary disuccsions in this regard was held on 17.7.2011 with the Vice Chancellor. He has given positive nod, and we have made all fundamental works in this direction. If this is achieved , our institute’s flag will fly very high.

The last annual convocation was held on 19.11.2009 where the then Hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu Shri. Surjit Singh Barnala was the Chief Guest. The General Secretary of the Federation participated in the programme. The CGM, SBI, Chennai Circle, the MD of LVB also participated in the function. On this occasion our Institute released the Hindi version of the Book, “Unity is strength” translated by us for the federation. All the Cadre development Programmes are conducted under the auspices of SBIOA Institute.

SBIOA INSTITUTE - COURSES OFFERED

COURSE NO.1 – POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN TRANSLATION (HINDI-ENGLISH) :
Duration: One year (June to May)
Qualifications required: 1 Graduate from a recognised University with second Language Hindi (or) Graduate from a recognised University with a Qualification in any of the Hindi Examinations conducted by various voluntary organisations considered equivalent to second language Hindi of Graduate level.

COURSE NO.2 – POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN JOURNALISM (HINDI MEDIUM)
Duration : One Year (June to May)
Qualifications required : Graduate from a Recognised University

COURSE NO.3 – POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN PERSONNEL ADMINISTRATION AND HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT (HINDI MEDIUM)
Duration: One Year (June to May)
Qualifications required: Graduate from a Recognised University Optional Language for writing response sheets and examination: The Course materials for course No.2 & 3 will be only in Hindi. However the candidates can choose either Hindi or English for writing their Response Sheets and Examination
